The Real Pastured Chicken

Details on OUR growing methods

Daily Movement

  • moved to fresh clean pasture every 24 hours
  • no stationary barns are used in the grow-out phase
  • they are not forced to live on yesterday's manure
  • mimics nature by constantly moving so parasites and disease don't take hold
  • spreads nutrients over the entire farm

Outside 24/7

  • our birds spend 24/7 outside after the brooding phase
  • we move them outside once the brooding phase is complete
  • they are kept warm and safe while they are too young to be outside (typically 2-3 weeks)
  • they are not given "access to the outdoors"
  • receive all the benefits of touching soil (microbes and nutrients)

Nutritional advantages

(independent lab tests done in 2018 and 2020 on our birds):

  • Source of Omega 3s
  • Raised in a truly pastured system (not just access to the outdoors)
  • We are not certified organic (organic chickens are not typically raised like this although they like to pretend they do)
  • Live outside 24/7 after the brooding phase
  • Moved daily to new clean fresh pasture (lots of greens, bugs and soil)
  • Integrated with the eco system (living on the soil with microbes, bugs, grasses and sunshine)
  • Provide nourishment for the plants on our farm to grow time and time again (every year our soil becomes more productive)
  • No antibiotics are needed or used
  • No hormones are added (illegal in Canada anyway but often a marketing tactic used)
  • Homemade supplemental feed from whole grains (no byproducts and made fresh almost daily)
  • Extra lean meat
  • Higher in protein than conventional or organic
  • Lower calories than conventional or organic
  • Lower fat content than conventional or organic
  • Higher omega 3s vs conventional or organic
  • Higher iron vs conventional or organic
  • Higher calcium vs conventional or organic
  • Lower cholesterol vs conventional or organic
  • Only producer in Ontario in the Local Niche Markets Program administered by Chicken Farmers of Ontario allowing a commercial sized supply of pastured chicken
  • Independently audited and inspected each year
  • Certified in animal welfare

Part of the eco system

  • our chickens play a critical role in the health of our eco system
  • provide much needed nutrients for the plants growing which helps all the animals
  • each year our soil becomes more productive than the previous year
  • excess hays and grasses produced are stored and used to feed our cattle in the winter
  • no chemicals or synthetic fertilizers are needed to keep our farm productive

Homemade Feed

  • we started making our own feed after years of being horrified of what is commonly used in animal feeds
  • we grow the crops or buy directly from the farmers that do
  • locally sourced
  • made fresh almost daily to maximize nutrition
  • since we started making our own feed our mortalities and morbidities have decreased by about 90%!
  • we can adjust our rations quickly as the weather changes to their needs
  • healthier chickens which means happier chickens
  • not made from lowest cost formulas (feed industry is typically given waste products to blend in feeds instead of taking to landfills!)
  • made from whole grains instead of the byproduct
  • new for 2021 our feed is now non-GMO

As you can see there is a huge difference in our chicken. The main focus of our farm is to create a nutritionally superior and cost effective meat to feed your family. Our unique process creates a more nutrient dense bird that allows you to get more for your money. We know that nutrition plays a very important role in the overall health and development of your family. Chicken is basically the most affordable and efficient meat protein available but we wanted to make it more nutritious. We can now officially say we have done that. We have had multiple lab tests done on our chickens proving they have a huge nutritional advantage over conventional and organic chickens. We make our own feed and move our chickens to fresh pasture each day. We have developed a unique system that allows us to grow a large amount of chicken although seasonally. From placing the chicks, moving to pasture, catching for processing, transporting for processing, working in the processing plant and selling from our farm, we are involved in every step. Complete transparency and we know everything that goes (or doesn't go) into our chickens.
